The shaded areas are power outages caused by weather. I see this as a very good reason why we need to invest in infrastructure in this country. In those boxes are, undoubtedly, the elderly, the infirm, children, infants, wives, etc, all without power in freezing temperatures.

Infrastructure matters and we, the people, don’t seem to care as evidenced by the map and our unwillingness to invest in upgrades and updates to our power grids, roads, communications lines or about anything else.

We rely on linemen to fix temporarily what we don’t care to fix long term.
